Class Eurotiomycetes
The Eurotiomycetes consist of 11 orders, 38 families, 367 genera, and more than 4,200 species. Species in this class are characterized by enclosed ascocarps (cleistothecia) containing rudimentary thin-walled asci that release ascospores by deliquescing (becoming fluid). When present, the asexual (conidial) spore stages of these fungi are various moulds, including the well-known genus Penicillium. One order of Eurotiomycetes have species within this database that are relevant to forest pathology: Coryneliales.
Order Coryneliales
The Coryneliales consist of 1 family, the Coryneliaceae, with 9 genera and 60 species.
Family Coryneliaceae
This small family consists of species that produce dark elongated ascomata that open by an ostiole or a split. Some species produce a loose powdery apical spore mass called a mazaedium. Asci are short-lived and deliquesce (becoming fluid) within the ascomata. Ascospores are dark, single-celled or single-septate, and sometimes ornamented. Most species occur on bark and dead wood, and many are symbiotic with algae, forming lichens.
